The North Cave

Back to Archaeological Sites

Very close to the ĠgantijaTemples is this cave. Discovered during quarrying in 1949, it contained a large quantity of material from the Tarxien Phase (c. 3000-2500 BC) suggesting that this could have been the Temples’ rubbish pit during this period.

Prior to the Tarxien Phase, the cave may have been a rock-cut tomb as some ceramic sherds of the Ġgantija scratched type (c.3600-3000 BC), together with fragments of human skull and some animal bones were also found.
