CITTADELLA VISITORS’ CENTRE

The Cittadella Visitors’ Centre is housed in two old water reservoirs built in the 1870’s in part of the Cittadella Ditch. The Cittadella Masterplan recommended that the two reservoirs be converted into a Visitors’ Centre to offer the much needed interpretation facilities at Cittadella. Conversion works were undertaken as part of the EU co-funded project for the Implementation of the Cittadella Masterplan Recommendations.

The Visitors’ Centre is divided into two main areas. The first area offers a number of interactive touch screens and printed panels which deal with various aspects of Cittadella including the evolution of Cittadella, nature, military history, ecclesiastical history and civil history. The other area was converted into a surround theatre where visitors can watch an eight minute video on the salient moments of the millenarian history of Cittadella. All information is available in eight languages.

A €5 ticket entitles visitors to visit the Cittadella Visitors’ Centre, the Gozo Archaeology Museum, the Nature Museum, the Old Prisons and the Gran Castello Historic House.

Prestigious Awards

Since the inauguration of the “Implementation of the Cittadella Masterplan Recommendations”- ERDF 246 project in June 2016, the Cittadella and its Visitors’ Centre have won numerous prestigious awards. A major component of the project was the regeneration of an abandoned 19th century reservoir into a visitors’ centre. Its rehabilitation was quite an innovative architectural and engineering endeavour which was commended and awarded by various entities.

  • Silver Medal 2016 by Din l-Art Ħelwa for distinct contribution to Maltese cultural heritage & achievement of architectural excellence in Malta;
  • Prix d’Honneur 2016 for major regeneration project;
  • Malta Architects Award 2016 for public buildings;
  • Malta Architects Award 2016 for rehabilitation & conservation projects.

Additionally the installation of multilingual interpretative panels; hi-tech multimedia; and the creation of a 3D multilingual show highlighting the history of the Cittadella have created an exclusive experience to thousands of visitors. This innovative show has so far attained the plaudits of various international entities such as:

  • Best Visitor Attraction Project 2017 by AV Awards in London;
  • Certificate of Excellence for 2017 by Trip Advisor;
  • Top Choice Tourist Attraction 2017 by Lian Org for China, Japan & Asian countries;
  • TEA Award – Best Themed Entertainment Award in California;
  • Travellers’ Choice 2018 by Trip Advisor.

Moreover in June 2018, the Cittadella ERDF 246 Project was selected among the five finalists under the category ‘Investing in Cultural Heritage’ for the Regiostars Awards 2018, which identify good practices in regional development and highlight original and innovative projects that are attractive and inspiring to other regions. This was the first time that a Maltese EU project, implemented through the use of European Regional Development Funds, has ever reached such a classification.

Furthermore in October 2018, an iPhone App developed for the Ċittadella was nominated as best National Digital Solution for Malta at the international World Summit Awards (WSA). The World Summit Awards are a global initiative which selects digital innovation projects that contributes towards a positive impact on society.
