Work as you roam – Gozo the digital nomad destination

Back to Blogs

Many of us believe that holidays are about leaving work behind and escaping the drills of everyday chores in search of beautiful and uplifting places, inspiring and thrilling or serene experiences that suit our mood, vibe and situation.

However, the post-Covid world indicates that it is now possible to live as a digital nomad and engage in remote work from a holiday home while on vacation. As the trend of workcations is adapted more, Gozo is also becoming a sought-after digital nomad destination. Some hate returning to the office to find an avalanche on their desk, an inundated inbox, or both, and now prefer to be flexible in their holiday approach.

The opportunity of working while on holiday has its benefits. For some families, who cannot match leave off work, or those who cannot get away from their desks for a more extended period, a remote work holiday can be a good solution because the family gets away while staying together. This solution also means affording longer overall holidays, which can be more enriching, possibly roping in elderly family members. Even though one might be working a certain number of hours, there is still the pleasure and feeling of a holiday at having downtime in a holiday location, breaking earlier and enjoying dinner with the family.

Check out our tips when thinking of Gozo as your digital nomad destination:

  • Gozo is one of the best destinations for families. It is not just a matter of sunny days, a heart-warming Mediterranean climate, safety, and a low crime rate. Still, it is easy to find and access services and adapt to living on an island where English is the second language, and the locals are friendly and welcoming. Since Gozo is a family friendly destination, organising your remote work in Gozo is easier.
  • Once you have decided to spend your working holiday in Gozo, it is vital to research your accommodation. In Gozo, there are a variety of rental options. From modern seaside apartments to traditional village houses, authentic farmhouses and sprawling villas, there are rentals for every type of budget. Your office can become a hilltop, a valley, or a village core. Although Gozo has a reliable public transport system, you will be much more comfortable organising yourself with a rented vehicle as you will be free to move around at your own pace.
  • Gozo is connected to the Internet with fibre optics and many WIFI hotspots. Naturally, if you’re working remotely from home, ensure that the chosen accommodation has the necessary equipment and services to provide a reliable connection without hiccups.
  • Life on the island of Gozo lacks nothing in terms of modern facilities. You can shop from the small local greengrocers or the street hawkers, but you will find that Gozo’s supermarkets are second to none regarding the variety of available products. Even people following specific diets will discover particular products available. However, it does not hurt to reach out and do some research, as this will ensure peace of mind.
  • Plan your days. In Gozo, it is very easy to capture the inspiring sunrise via an early morning jog and be at your remote desk by eight o’clock. Distances in Gozo are so minute that it works in your favour allowing you to pop in more activities into your day without adding stress. Even if you close your day at 17.00, there is still time to swim at one of the beaches and have a perfect evening chilling out under the Mediterranean starry skies or enjoying the local events. Maybe the best idea is to plan to work only in the mornings or until early afternoon. In that case, Gozitan afternoons are never-ending, especially in spring and summer. Gozo is known for the myriad of cultural activities and events over the seasons. There are so many things to do in Gozo that there is no doubt that remote working from the island allows one to indulge in the island experience and adventure.

Usually, vacations are about getting away from it all. But if you cannot fully unplug, a holiday-work combo in Gozo is still rewarding. Integrating the Gozitan vibe into your job will undoubtedly remove any blockage and dullness you have encountered. As the island weaves its magic, your creativity will flourish, and so will your productivity.

Whether you’re venturing as a digital nomad in solo mode, with your partner or family, the boundaries of work and play will somewhat evaporate, leaving you rewarded with fun-filled days.
