Top 10 Things Not to Miss in Easter Time in Gozo

Back to Blogs

March has been a whirlwind month on the island of Gozo. As the island got closer to Spring and proceeded through the Lenten period, the calendar of events was brimming with activities, which will continue throughout the rest of March and the festive period of  Paschaltide.

Here are ten things not to miss out if you’re visiting the island during Easter time:

Easter Markets, Egg Hunts, and Crafts—Check out Gozo’s calendar if you’re interested in visiting an Easter Market. Another highlight to consider is Ta’ Dbiegi Crafts Village, a perfect spot to discover local crafts, artisanal products, and seasonal delicacies while picking some Easter gifts. Ta’ Dbieġi Crafts village is also organising an Easter Egg Hunt this year.

Devotional Processions – Gozo’s traditional Good Friday solemn processions know their roots in the faith of the islands. Today’s events are also clearly marked by a love for the richly adorned artistic statues and embellished costumes worn by the participants as a form or reenactment of the biblical scenes. However, nothing compares to the aura of the penitents, who hide their identity behind the capirote, a form of conical fabric hat and carry crosses or trudge heavy burdens of chains along the streets.

Solemn Concerts: Sometimes, it’s challenging to comprehend how the small island of Gozo has a vibrant cultural community that strives so hard, often voluntarily, to stage performances and concerts throughout the year. During this time, various band clubs, choirs and musical ensembles will be staging solemn concerts to mark and honour the passion of Christ.

Maudy Thursday & Good Friday Observances – Visiting churches on Maudy Thursday evening is one way of absorbing the vibe of Holy Week. On Maudy Thursday evening, the churches exude the mysterious aura of beautifully adorned churches representing the sepulture of the Lord, an ornate manifestation of flower arrangements, decorations, and candles. As the flickering flames cast their gentle glow in the dimly lit churches, the profoundly moving atmosphere is also infused with the aromatic scent of balm and spices that captivates the senses and fosters a sense of reverence.

Pageants, Performances, and Exhibitions—Gozitans have always passionately venerated Christ’s death and resurrection. At this time of year, many local drama groups will be engaged in performances and pageants that act as memorials in one way or another. Similarly, enthusiasts will set up exhibitions of statuettes that are open for public viewing.

Following the Via Crucis along Għammar Hill—If you’re in Gozo to participate in religious and holy manifestations, take our suggestion and reserve some time to hike up the steep Għammar Hill. The Carrara Marble statues that present the stations of the Cross and dot the passage along the steep hillside provide the ideal spots for meditating on Christ’s final journey and crucifixion.

Gozo’s Scenic Countryside -Grab a wind jacket and head to the countryside. Springtime is a magnificent time in Gozo, and a couple of hours in this heaven will be a revitalising inspiration for the body, mind and spirit. The gorgeous sunny spring days are the perfect antidote to beat the blues. Follow up some paths along the island’s northern or eastern coast, take a short walk down Lunzjata Valley, or check out one of the longer hikes, such as hiking down the San Blas route or down to Xatt l-Aħmar.

Easter Treats—Gozo’s cherished Easter treat is the figolla. This delicacy, composed of a sweet pastry sandwich with a layer of almond paste, comes in all shapes and figures. Ducks, bunnies, butterflies, and lambs are among the favourites, but so are mermaid and guitar shapes. Covered in chocolate or icing and decorated with piped icing or drizzled with sweet confetti, it is difficult to resist this treat! In some locations, you might also be able to find the carob sweets, Karamelli tal-Ħarrub. These sweet concoctions are typically considered sweet substitutes during Lent, which, in its roots, is a time of penance. Another typical sweet of the season is the kwareżimal, a ‘no-fat’ sweet that while echoing fasting, has a delightful taste of spices such as cinnamon and cloves.

Easter Sunday Celebrations, Lunch & Fun – Gozo’s Easter celebrations start on the Easter Vigil, a joyous celebration of Christ’s resurrection. Do not miss out on the vibrant procession with the resurrection of the Risen Christ, where the statue-bearers sprint some of the distance. Book at one of the local restaurants and indulge in a succulent Easter Sunday lunch. Then head to Villa Rundle Gardens, where a feast of fun, Easter games and crafts awaits the little ones

Spring Beach Retreat—For a refreshing and breezy escape and peaceful relaxation, make sure you visit one of Gozo’s beaches. A picnic will be a good idea. In the warm weather, the beaches become more inviting, and there is no doubt that some will even dare take a dip.

Get yourself ready. If you haven’t yet booked your accommodation, check out some of the local boutique hotels or B&Bs, and then make sure you bookmark the calendar of events (www.eventsingozo.com). You cannot afford to miss out on Gozo this Easter!
