Of Wine, Honey, Olive Oil, Herbs & the Gozitan Ftira…the delight of Gozo

Back to Blogs

When you’re in Gozo you might be captivated by the appeal of the ‘pomzkillious’ island – a microcosm of so many historical, cultural and artistic mosaic pieces presenting themselves fluidly on a tapestry of enthralling sea and landscapes.  One side of Gozo that should not be overlooked is the authentic tastes which are the result of Gozitan produce.   August is the start of the Gozitan agricultural year and it is befitting that during August and September, Gozo will be hosting four unique food events.

Right after the feast of Santa Marija, which is synonymous with the Santa Marija Agricultural Fair,  the Għaqda Għajn Tuta of Kerċem will be hosting the second edition of Dawra Durella Lura fiż-Żmien. The festival, which will be held on the 20th of August, promises to be a time travel capsule echoing nostalgic days.  As it celebrates  three pillars of Maltese culture –  the traditional folk song Għana, the Ftira Maltija and Marċi Brijjużi (band marches), the event’s highlight will be a huge local ftira, stuffed with local foods like sundried tomatoes, capers, olives, olive oil, tomato paste and bigilla.  Wine will also be served and stands promoting local food and drinks will be present.  Among the attractions, one can enjoy traditional games that were once common in everyday life.  The event which will be held in Ġnien Ċensu Xiberras, should not be missed by families and people of all ages.

On  16th September, the Fontana Wine Festival returns after an absence of two years.  Organised by the Kummissjoni Żgħażagħ Fontana, this is a unique festival that flaunts Fontana’s legacy of wine, wine bars and wineries.  The festival will focus on a vast selection of Gozitan red, white, rose’ and sweet wines produced from grapes cultivated in Gozo. Tasting a glass of wine produced in the locality of Fontana is a must.  Those attending can buy a commemorative glass and discover the taste of different wines. A kitchen area will include food stalls and one can chill in the garden area while enjoying the main stage.  Entertainment will be provided by the local bands Red Electrick and D capitals with the Fontana Parish Church acting as a backdrop.

The 4th edition of the Wine, Olive Oil and Honey event, organized by the Għasri Local Council will be held on 17th September.  An event which is aimed at all the family, the festival promises to be a feast of sumptuous food complete with a suckling pig roast, delicacies made from olive oil and honey and wine tasting.  Other activities include live entertainment by MAE and DCapitals Band, a children’s area, a homemade wine competition and art exhibitions.  It is the perfect appointment to experience the traditional ambience of a small village in celebration mode.

On the 18th of September, the village of Għarb will host the Herb Festival, a country-style event where new and experienced herbalists and herb lovers can meet to celebrate and share their lore for plant beauty, medicinal plants and remedies along with recipes.
