Għasri Trails: A Nature Lover’s Paradise

Back to Blogs

With fewer than 500 residents, Għasri village in Gozo is the smallest on the islands.  Yet, its unparalleled charm makes it a must-visit destination for holidaymakers and travellers exploring Gozo.  If you relish countryside strolls, Għasri should be at the top of your itinerary, boasting the quintessential rural village experience.

The village’s name is believed to originate from ‘għasar,’ denoting the time between afternoon and evening, possibly evoking the tranquil ambience that envelops the village at dusk.  However, Għasri is a delight to explore at any time of day!

Nestled between the hills of Żebbuġ and Għammar on an open swathe of land, the village presents a picturesque scene, with its cluster of houses surrounding the village church resembling an illustration from a storybook, even from a distance.  As you approach Għasri, you will also be passing through the Gozitan countryside, with the Aqueducts adding to the scenic route.  Once within Għasri’s confines, there are various routes and landmarks to note.

The Corpus Christi Parish Church, which was constructed more than a century ago, is a noteworthy example of Baroque architecture.  Adorned with one grand dome and four smaller ones, this church’s design is attributed to the local priest Ġużepp Diacono.  The focal point of the church is its titular altarpiece depicting The Last Supper of Christ, a masterpiece painted by Lazzaro Pisani, a renowned Maltese artist from the turn of the nineteenth century.   Għasri celebrates the feast of Christ the Saviour in June.

A popular trek in Għasri involves ascending the hill hosting the Ta’ Ġordan Lighthouse.  Upon reaching the summit, breathtaking scenic vistas await.  Close to the recently restored and still operational lighthouse, erected in 1851, lies another significant landmark reminiscent of British colonial rule: the military observation point.

The winding path that guides you to Wied il-Mielaħ is a different hiking trail worth exploring.  The natural stone arch gating the gorge of Wied il-Mielaħ has garnered attention in recent years.  While many admire its stunning scenic vistas, the steep ravine area attracts extreme sports enthusiasts.

Exploring the coastline through hiking in this region presents a chance to marvel at the magnificent cliffs descending into the azure depths of the sea below.  While some delight in the leisurely hike, others seek thrills by navigating the terrain on a mountain bike or gliding through on a Segway.  The route eventually leads to the saltpans area in Xwejni.

Indeed, one cannot overlook the allure of Wied il-Għasri.  Irresistible in every weather condition, this Gozitan fjord exudes enchantment and has graced Gozitan postcards for over half a century.  The captivating turquoise waters gently caressing the pebbled shore are truly mesmerizing.  If you have a penchant for the underwater realm, we highly recommend dedicating some time to snorkelling here.  Additionally, diving enthusiasts should take note of Cathedral Cave, a diving site in the area, which is suitable for divers of all skill levels.

While hiking the backstreets of Għasri, one cannot but notice the quaint country chapel.  This serene sanctuary, dedicated to Our Lady of Patronage, was the first basilica in Gozo and tied to the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome.  The small village of Għasri boasts another tiny chapel, one that is dedicated to San Publius, the first bishop of Malta.

Staying in Għasri is never a bad idea for an authentic Gozitan experience.  If you have a fondness for the pastoral charm and rustic settings and crave the serenity of nature, Għasri offers precisely that—with the added bonus of opportunities for outdoor activities like hiking and cycling. The village is dotted with farmhouses  lovingly restored into cozy holiday accommodations.

You’ll undoubtedly relish the sensation of waking up and spending days in the countryside  away from the hustle and bustle of the modern world.
