Back to Churches and Chapels

The Old Parish Church of Għajnsielem stands on Independence Square, in the heart of the old part of the village. The first stone was laid in 1810 and the building completed by 1820. As the population of the village grew the church had to be extended and works to enlarge it started in 1867. The church you see today was finished in 1877.

In 1866 the titular statue of our Lady of Loreto was brought to Għajnsielem from Marseilles in France, after being commissioned by the villagers in thanks for their escape from the plague which ravaged Malta in 1865.
