The procession with Good Friday statues in Qala has its origins in the seventies when the parish used to organise an open air Way of the Cross. Years later, people dressed as biblical characters started to participate in this annual spiritual activity during the procession featuring the statue of Our Lady of Sorrows, normally held one week before Good Friday. Various statues portraying different episodes from the Passion of Our Lord have been commissioned during the last thirty years and these are carried shoulder high throughout the procession.

Il-Purċissjoni tal-Vari tal-Ġimgħa l-Kbira ssib l-oriġini tagħha fil- Parroċċa tal-Qala fis-snin sebgħin meta kienet issir it-Talba tat-Triq tas-Salib fil-beraħ. Fis-snin tmenin kienu jitlibbsu diversi persunaġġi bibliċi waqt il-purċissjoni tad-Duluri, u fis-snin disgħin bdiet issir it-Triq tas-Salib fil-beraħ bl-istatwa tal-Kurċifiss maħdum bl-injam ġewwa Ortisei. Fl-2002 il-purċissjoni bdiet issir bil-vari ta’ Kristu l-Marbut, l-Ecce Homo, il-Kurċifiss, l-Inżul ta’ Kristu minn fuq is-Salib u l-Monument. Fl-2005 sar ir-Redentur, fl-2011 waslet l-istatwa ta’ Ġesù fl-Ort u fl-2015 saret l-istatwa tal-Veronika.
