A Painted Account of a Spiritual Experience

Gozitan artist Aaron Formosa shall be holding a Sacred Art exhibiton “Intimations” at the Banca Giurtale, Independence Square, Victoria Gozo. This is his fourth personal exhibition. It will be officially inaugurated by the Hon. Dr. Justyne Caruana, Minister for Gozo on Friday 2nd November 2018. The exhibition will remain open up till the 25th of the month.

The main theme behind the exhibition is human existence in the light of faith or in the light of Christ – the spiritual light which enlightens the human predicament. This condition can be enlightened only if man, through his own free will, lets this light illuminate upon the darkness of his existence.

Through this collection the artist intends to offer a new conception of sacred art; a personal interpretation of Biblical and religious narratives – an interpretation somewhat different from those with which we are normally acquainted in our local churches.

The subject of the poster is Christ and the sinner who washed his feet. The episode occurs in a rather dark room. Apart from Christ and the woman there are the Pharisees who are witness to what is going on. This somber interior basically represents the human conditon which will remain in darkness unless one accepts the Divine help or Grace (which is represented by the incoming light).

In the collection one finds paitings depicting the Nativity of Christ, Christ and the children, Christ raising the daughter of Jairus from the dead, Christ as the Good Shepherd; Marian themes like the Marriage of the Virgin, Mary’s Assumption into Heaven; and others like the Call of Karmni Grima.

Formosa wants to generate an atmosphere of deep spirituality. This is done by creating an intensity of light and shade through the use of particular colours (red for example, but not only) and by delineating the figures vaguely and indistinctly. The intention is that of giving hints – or intimations – of a spritual experience and profound emotions. Put together, one near each other, the paintings will hopefully transmit this general feeling of a deep spirituality which the artist hopes to be absorbed by the public. The exhibition is a search for the self which is the stepping stone for the sublime.

The exhibition runs at the Banca Giuratale, Independence Square, Victoria until November 25. Opening hours are Monday to Friday from 8.00am to 2.30pm; Saturdays and Sundays from 9.00am to 12.00pm.
