The Procession of Good Friday was held for the first time in 1913. That year there were only three statues: the Bust of Ecce Homo (1752), Our Lady of Sorrows (1863) and the Burial of Jesus Christ. Between 1914 and 1921, a traditional set of statues was made by Carmel Mallia of Hal Qormi. During the period 1927 and 1955 the statues were changed, with the exception of that of the Veronica. Five statues were made of wood in Bolzano, Italy. During the last 40 years, several restoration works have been carried out on the statues as well as on the Biblical attire used during the procession. Around 150 children, 150 biblical personalities and Roman soldiers take part in this procession.
