Planning for an autumnal holiday in Gozo

Back to Blogs

Gozo is a beautiful island and autumn simply makes it just more delightful! The warm glow of summer is still present but the lower temperatures registered on the thermometers make it easier to spend more time outside. This leads to a more pleasurable vacation.

1. Getting to the island
Arriving on the island has to be organised via the Malta International Airport and eventually you will need to take the ferry, which is still the only connection that Gozo has with mainland Malta. The ferry trip which takes around 30 minutes will give you the very first taste of what the islands of Gozo and Comino offer. Some might get to the island via yachts and dock at Mġarr Harbour.

2. Countless Accommodation Opportunities
As the crowds thin out at the end of the summer, autumn means more options available when it comes to booking a place where to stay. It’s always a joy to arrive at your rented farmhouse and open the main door that usually leads to an internal courtyard or alfresco dining and swimming pool area. You can look into booking one of the tastefully designed boutique hotels. Whether they’re located in the middle of the valley, in the charming village core or centrally in Gozo’s main town of Victoria, they’re always a good base from which you can explore the rest of the island. You can also check out the 4-star and 5-star deluxe options.

3. Sea and Coast
Autumn in Gozo exudes exotic warmth so sea activities like swimming, snorkelling and water sports are still on. The beaches are naturally less crowded, so a morning at the beach is usually a great relaxing idea. For the adventurous, kayaking around the coast past sandy coves, rocky inlets and sheer-dropping cliffs also means discovering many caves that seem to have been punched out of Gozo’s coast. You can also experience the same sights in a more relaxed mode, via boat tour. At this time of the year, you should also be visiting Comino. Autumn can be a quieter time on this island and you can enjoy hours of bliss at the Blue Lagoon.

4. Country and Village Life
Put on walking shoes and hike around the island. There are many paths to follow around the coast, or meandering through hills and valleys. The countryside awakens after the first rains and the verdant green bursts through the arid ochre hues of summer. Exploring the rural side of the island will get you in touch with the locals and their way of life. Stop by at a traditional village square bar or café and order a typical ‘ftira’. Autumn is also the harvest season so an afternoon at a farming estate can be rewarding.

5. The city in splendour – Gozo is Opera
October is the opera season in Gozo so make sure that you book early if you enjoy the glamorous world of the theatre. This year Gozo’s theatres will be presenting La Traviata and Tosca. Check out Gozo’s cultural calendar for other events and exhibitions such as the Folk Festival and Festival Mediterranea.

You cannot visit Gozo this autumn without exploring the Citadel. This year this fortress has been nominated as one of the RegioStars Finalists. Rising above the villages of the island, this Citadel provides the experience of stepping back in time, to re-live the story of the island of Gozo.
