Striking, diverse landscapes, clear blue skies and a magnificent sea are among the reasons why over the years Gozo has served as a backdrop for the film-making industry.

The island is not only endowed with natural beauty and fair weather that makes the job easier, but it is a location where expertise and skilled craftsmen are not difficult to come by. This coupled with a hard-working attitude and keen pride of excelling in one’s job makes the job of filming in Gozo much easier. During the summer season, one also has the benefit of long filming hours. Gozo is connected to mainland Malta via the ferry service and simply an hour away from the Malta International Airport. Thus travelling to and from Gozo is very convenient. On another note, Gozo has its own yacht marina.

By the Sea: Angelina Jolie’s production ‘By the Sea’ was filmed at the quiet cove of Mgarr ix-Xini. The charming bay shot to stardom and it was even acclaimed as one of the top 10 must-see places in the world by CNN.

The Count of Monte Cristo: The French production pictured the coastal tower of Santa Maria on Comino as the prison from which Alexander Dumas’ hero Edmond Dantes escapes.

Game of Thrones: The opening scene of ‘Games of Thrones’ will always be a nostalgic point as it has immortalized the Azure Window which has since the filming collapsed into the sea.

Troy: Comino’s Blue Lagoon found its way in ‘Troy’ and those who have visited the island can immediately recognize the place where Achilles and his mother Thetis stand as she talks to him before he leaves for Troy.

Clash of the Titans: The Azure Window was also featured in the ‘Clash of the Titans’, a 1981 production. The famous scene of the battle with the Kraken takes place at the Azure Window.

Filming is hard work but nevertheless, Gozo allows you and your crew to unwind, chill and enjoy the island. Once off the set, nothing stops you from being a ‘regular’ tourist exploring the island, dining out, and mingling with the locals just like you were on holiday!
