10 Unmissable Events this Summer

Kids have already started a countdown to summer holidays.  If truth be told, we all are looking forward to the long summer days. Whilst Gozo’s an island for all seasons, there’s no doubt that in summer you can enjoy Gozo twenty-four hours a day.

Here we’re bringing you ten events that you cannot miss this summer in Gozo!

  1. Summer is first of all the festa season. Though emanating from religious beliefs, festas have their sacred and profane aspects and both worth the experience.  The first feast is at the end of May and over summer one can enjoy all of these:
    • 28th May: Feast of St. Paul in Munxar
    • 4th June: Feast of St. Anthony in Għajnsielem
    • 11th June: Feast of Corpus Christi in Għasri
    • 18th June: Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Fontana
    • 25th June: Feast of St. John the Baptist in Xewkija
    • 29th June: Feast of St. Peter and St. Paul in Nadur
    • 2nd July: Feast of the Visitation in Għarb
    • 9th July: Feast of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Kerċem
    • 16th July: Feast of St. George in Victoria
    • 23rd July: Feast of St. Margaret in Sannat
    • 30th July: Feast of St. Lawrence in San Lawrenz
    • 6th August: Feast of St. Joseph in Qala
    • 15th August: Feast of the Assumption of Our Lady in Victoria
    • 20th August: Feast of the Assumption of Our Lady in Żebbuġ
    • 27th August: Feast of Our Lady of Loreto in Għajnsielem
    • 8th September: Feast of Our Lady of Victories in Xagħra
    • 17th September: Feast of Our Lady of Graces in Victoria
  1. Victoria International Arts Festival – From 6th June to 10th July, Gozo will host the Victoria International Arts Festival featuring concerts, exhibitions, master classes and specialised talks.  This year’s festival will be the 20th edition and there will be three inaugural events and a total of 37 concerts will be staged comprising over 600 performers from 20 different countries.  Unmissable!
  1. The Infiorata of Għarb – The infiorata, an elaborate mosaic made up of the petals of fresh flowers is always a feast for the eyes.  The infiorata in Gharb has been a yearly event for the past 14 years, ever since the village of Għarb twinned with the comune of Gerano in Italy, where one finds the oldest infiorata tradition in Italy.  This year it will be held on 2nd July.
  1. Marsalmuzajk & Gozo Ceramics Festival –  On 22nd July, you can enjoy theMosaic Festival in Marsalforn. This promises to be a colourful and interesting exposition of this fascinating art. The event is aimed at all ages and will be held along the Marsalforn port area. The Gozo Ceramics Festival will be held in Xlendi on 5th August and this will involve a presentation of ceramic artefacts by local artists.  The live demonstration will include different ceramic techniques such as throwing, coiling, modelling, slab building and firing.
  1. Santa Marija – Santa Marija, celebrated on the 15th of August, is one of Gozo’s favourite feast and coincides witht the peak holiday season.  It’s been linked with the traditional Agricultural Show that has been held in Rundle Gardens for over a century. 
  1. The Feast of Comino – On the 18th and 19th of August it’s time to heed to Comino for the feast that is celebrated on the island.   The hamlet feast which was held again in 2015 after an absence of 40 years, seems to be gaining in popularity and  is a mix of religious ceremonies and social activities.
  1. The Delicata Classic Wine Festival – Held in Nadur, from the 18th to the 20th of August, in the Council Gardens, the Delicata Classic Wine Festival is an important cultural event in Gozo’s calendar. Enjoy music and food while sampling D.O.K. and I.G.T wines.
  1. Feast of St. John Martyr in Xewkija – On 29th August, the feast of the martyrdom of St. John the Baptist, the village of Xewkija holds a traditional village square dinner amidst a celebration animated by music and dance that culminates in a traditional bonfire. 
  1. Musical Summer Nights – During the month of August, the  Summer Night events programme is organised with the participation of local music bands.   Come September, there are more musical events namely:
    • 2nd September – Jazz Do Festival at Mġarr Harbour
    • 9th September – Stage and Proms on the Sea at the Mġarr Marina
    • 10th September – Rock Concert by The Travellers at Marsalforn.
  1. Qala International Folk Festival – The summer season comes to an end with the 12th edition Qala International Folk Festival being held between 22nd and 24th September.  Join in the weekend-long of music, folk dance and costumes along with traditional food in the village square of Qala.
